Tjeukemeer

Explore the beautiful Tjeukemeer

Tjeukemeer (or as the locals say: Tsjûkemar) is with 22 square kilometers the biggest inland lake of the region Friesland, in the North of the Netherlands. According to the legend, this lake was created by an immense forest fire, that made the peat bogs burn and so a lake arose: Tjeukemeer (for a more detailed story we recommend you to ask the locals).

Sailing the Tjeukemeer

The Tjeukemeer is a calm place to sail, because relatively few other boats can be spotted. If you’re looking for a bit more adventure, there is always the opportunity to cross the ‘Follegasloot’ and sail towards the Ijsselmeer. However, during the summer the Tjeukemeer and the nearby town Lemmer are known for the many water sport activities.

Things to do?

Besides hike- and bicycle tours in the infinite nature of Friesland, the nearby town Lemmer can be found, as said, perhaps the most popular place to be for all types of water sport activities. During the summer, a lot of tourist can be found here, but when the height of the season is over, you will be overwhelmed by stunning flora and fauna.
