The most famous sailing area of the Netherlands is Friesland.
Here you will find the IJsselmeer, the many Frisian Lakes and a part of the Wadden Sea. Rent a motor cruiser, a sloop or a sailing boat and head to De Alde Feanen National Park around Eernewoude, the Groote Brekken, the Sneekermeer, the Tjeukemeer, the Heegermeer, and the Slotermeer. Rent a boat in Leeuwarden, Stavoren, Sneek, Grou, Heeg or one of the many other villages and towns and experience Friesland!
Friesland consists of more than 40% water. That's why you can go almost anywhere in Friesland by boat. By renting a tender and sailboat you can sail the beautiful, fresh, vast meadows to beautiful places where you can moor and enjoy the peace and quiet that this province offers. The many Frisian lakes are also easily accessible by boat.
Sailing in Sneek is not always quiet. Because this is a very popular location you will meet many other boaters here in high season. This area is suitable for a part of a day, a day or even a number of days up to a week. All landlords where you can rent sloops or other boats often know nice routes that you can sail.
The Wadden Sea offers a wonderful experience. At this location the sunset is different than you are used to. However, this area is only suitable for experienced sailors. You can make the crossing to the wadden islands or fall dry with a flat bottom at low tide.
Events
The most famous event in Friesland takes place in Sneek, the Sneekweek. This event was originally a sailing regatta but has grown into a big event through Sneek and surroundings with many festivities. This year it is planned from 1 to 6 August 2020. During the Sneekweek thousands of people will go out on the water to party and celebrate. If you want to rent a boat or sloop you will have to be there early.
SKS Skûtsjesilen in Grou is a busy event which this year will take place on Saturday 18 July to Friday 31 July. This is a championship skûtsje sailing and takes place in the Grou area.
