Friesland

The Dutch province of Friesland (pronounced as Freese-land, just like cheese!) is known for its many lakes. That’s why it’s a very popular area among both national and international water sports lovers. From regular sailing to ‘skûtsjesilen’, sailing with typical Frysian boats, there are plenty of possibilities for families, daytrippers and party people. When you’ve had enough of the water, there’s plenty to do on land, too!

These towns are known for the ‘Eleven Cities Tour’ (Elfstedentocht in Dutch), a national ice skating contest, leading past all of the eleven historical cities of Friesland. For all those party lovers out there, there’s the annual “Sneekweek” in the summer; water sports and party combined! This is the biggest sailing event in Europe and attracts a lot of people.
