Hiring A Boat In Terherne

Tenders and cabin cruisers offer the best options for seeing more of the area via the canals while sailing yachts and motor yachts are available for sailors hoping to take on the Frisian winds out on the lakes. Skippered yachts are available for those who want to venture onto the Wadden Sea without manning the helm.

Friesland has a veritable bounty of free moorings with scenic options in wild, unspoiled areas such as the Sneekermeer, offering nights afloat with nothing but the water and the sky for company. More convenient choices are perched across the cities and towns for sailors hoping to enjoy a local beer out on dry land.

Explore Terherne By Renting A Boat

Terherne offers a quiet and convenient, if ever so slightly off-the-beaten-path location from which to explore picturesque Frisian villages such as Grou and Eernewoude to the south, and cosy Langweer and Heeg to the north -- all easily reachable, and navigable by water. Setting out along the scenic canals of the village, the genial banks of the Sneekermeer are just a short boat ride away, with plenty of opportunity for water skiing and wakeboarding, as well as a good serving of restaurants, cafes and bars. And from here, boaters can easily follow the winds to De Alde Feanen National Park, the Slotermeer and the Groote Breken or stay close to Sneek to explore the delightful waterside hamlet of Offingawier.

Cyclists and walkers have myriad options for exploring the Terherne countryside, with a particularly scenic route linking the village to Sneek via a loop that leads out over the dikes, with stunning views over the Snitser Mar, the Vaarweg and the Terhernster Puollen, and good access to the eastern banks of lake Sneekermeer. Hire a cabin cruiser here, and take a few days along the canals to explore the lakes, starting at Terherne and travelling south towards the beautiful Langwarder Wielen and then join the long Scharsterrijn Canal to the region's largest lake: the Tjeukemeer (Tsjûkemar).

Throughout August several Skûtsjesilen competitions are held in Friesland, with typical flat-bottomed Frisian sailing ships taking to the water for a series of races that bring the vintage boats (once used almost entirely for farming) past villages and lakes such as the Sneekermer and within walking/ sailing distance of Terherne. Also in August, Sneekweek brings hundreds of boats and a firework-filled launch event to the waterways around Sneek. The event ends with the colourful Holland-Friesland Rainbow-class boat race between the Frisians and the Dutch.
